Coast Guard Capt. Michael Jett, chief of enforcement for the Coast Guard's Miami-based Seventh District, was recognized as the U.S. Coast Guard's Ancient Mariner during a ceremony June 10 in Seattle, Wash.
Ancient Mariner is the title given to the enlisted person with the earliest date of qualification as a cutterman, with at least 10 years of service. Recipients must 'personify and uphold the core values of honor, respect and devotion to duty, along with the professionalism and leadership associated with long service at sea,' a Coast Guard statement said. Jett is the 12th commissioned Ancient Mariner since the program was started in 1978.
Jett has been responsible for maritime law enforcement operations in the Seventh District since September 2005. The Seventh District includes Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and the entire Caribbean Sea.
