McAllister was part of the fourth generation of a family that has owned a tugboat company in New York harbor for almost 140 years. His brother, Brian A. McAllister, now runs New York-based McAllister Towing, which operates from Portland, Maine, to San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Anthony McAllister also started the McAllister Feeder Service to transport cargo arriving on vessels from overseas. That service, which began in the 1970s but is no longer active, accounted in its heyday for much of McAllister Towing's business.
