The Belgian port is now the world's 15th-largest port (it was 14th last year) having been surpassed by Tianjin and Port Plang. Despite its volume losses, Antwerp was able to surpass fellow northern European port Hamburg, which dropped from 12th to 16th in 2009.
Aside from container volume, Antwerp also saw significant declines in roll-on/roll-off (down 27.6 percent), dry bulk (36.4 percent drop), breakbulk (down 38.3 percent). Overall tonnage declined 16.7 percent, to 157 million tons.
