Antwerp seaport adds Descartes system

   Descartes has integrated its messaging services with the e-desk application at the Antwerp Port Community System, a network that connects port participants and facilitates data exchange.
   Now port members can send paper-based processes in the cloud and the port can transmit standardized wireless messages using Descartes’ global logistics network.
   The community system’s e-desk application was created to meet the reporting standards of the European Union’s export control systems initiative. Users can now also transmit shipment status and other information to customs authorities.
   According to officials, the new system allows 60 percent of declarants to report directly to customs, saving time and money.
   “It’s a huge operational advantage that we’re no longer dependent on physically going to the quay for our export declarations,” Peter Verlinden, customs manager at Rhenus Customs NV, said in a statement. “Descartes’ tightly integrated system immediately processes responses and alerts from e-Desk so that we have clear visibility into our operations.” – Jon Ross
