ANTWERP SEES 4% RISE IN CONTAINER TRAFFIC

   The port of Antwerp said that its preliminary container traffic volume for 2001 was about 4.2 million TEUs, or 46.2 million tons, representing a 3.7-percent increase in containerized tonnage over 2000.

   General cargo traffic at the port decreased by 13 percent in 2001 to 15.9 million tons. Roll-on/roll-off port volume was 6 million tons, the same as in 2000. Liquid bulk traffic reached 34.5 million tons, up from 34 million tons. Dry bulk volume amounted to 27.3 million tons, down from 27.8 million.

   Total port traffic including all cargo types was 130 million tons in 2001, down slightly from the 130.5 million total handled in 2000.
