Antwerp’s 2006 throughput up 8% to 7 million TEUs

The Antwerp Port Authority today reported a provisional annual throughput of about 7 million TEUs in 2006, up 8 percent over the 6.5 million TEUs handled in 2005.

   In its first full year of operating, the Deurganck tidal dock handled 800,000 TEUs, the Belgian port said.

   Total port volume, including general cargo, roll-on/roll-off shipments and bulk, is expected to be 167.3 million tons, up 4 percent from 160 million tons last year.

   A total of 15,750 ships are expected to call at the port by the end of the year, representing a 3.6 percent rise compared to 2005.
