The company said its SafeFleet Certification program will compare safety performance of companies against averages for the U.S. trucking industry in categories such as:
' Out-of-service violations.
' Department of Transportation crashes (those that involve injury, fatality or tow).
' Crash-related injuries and fatalities.
' Injuries that result in lost workdays.
Fleets would earn a “gold” certification if their safety performance is 35 percent better than the industry, “silver” if 25 percent better, or “bronze” if 15 percent better. Fleets would renew their certification every two years.
David Mitchell, director of risk control and safety for Aon’s trucking practice, said only about 15 percent of trucking companies would be able to meet the standards.
He said with a third-party audit, trucking companies might experience improved claims defense and reduced claims costs, favorable treatment from insurance and reinsurance underwriters, better driver retention, and increased sales to shippers.
