Also, a special AOTOS Award will be presented to Gen. Norton A. Schwartz, Commander of the U.S. Transportation Command, the management organization for global air, land and sea transportation for the Defense Department.

Founded in 1997, the U.S. Maritime Alliance negotiates the master contract with the International Longshoremen’s Association for an alliance of container carriers, direct employers, and port associations serving the East and Gulf coasts.

John Bowers, chairman of the AOTOS Committee and president emeritus of the ILA and, said Capo is “a friend and colleague across the negotiating table for many years and his leadership skills command respect by all who know him.”

Saltchuk owns or has partial interest in 20 independent operating companies including Puerto Rico carrier Sea Star Line, the Alaska carrier Totem Ocean Trailer Express, American Shipping Group, Interocean American Shipping, Foss Maritime Co., and American Cargo Transport.

The AOTOS awards are widely viewed as the most prestigious honors in the maritime industry and will be presented at a gala industry dinner and dance to be held Nov. 7 at the Sheraton New York Hotel and Towers, New York City.

All proceeds from the event will benefit the efforts of United Seamen’s Service abroad for merchant mariners from the United States and other free world countries.

The program will also honor U.S. seafarers involved in specific acts of bravery at sea.

Founded in 1942, United Seaman’s Services provides services for the merchant mariners, members of the U.S. armed forces, and seafarers of the world. It operates centers in eight foreign ports and provides seagoing libraries to American vessels through its affiliate, the American Merchant Marine Library Association.

Information about the gala, tickets and advertising journal is available from USS AOTOS Coordinator Barbara Spector Yeninas, barbara@bsya.com) or Kimberly McCloskey (kimberly@bsya.com) at (800) 804-5279 or (718) 369-3818.
