APL DIRECT LOGISTICS ADDS SERVICE    APL Direct Logistics has added a service that enables catalogue companies and e-tailers to notify customers when their packages will be arriving — especially if they're arriving late.
   The new service, Proactive Parcel Management, enables users to monitor packages while they are in the package carriers' delivery system, and if a package is going to be delivered later than promised, to advise the customer.
   Companies may also choose to outsource their tracking management and customer service operations to Jacksonville, Fla.-based APL Direct Logistics, which in turn may contact the consumer.
   APL Direct Logistics said the system would help reduce call volumes into customer support call centers. Research shows that 20 percent of all calls to consumer direct marketing companies concern package delivery — prior to the date the package is supposed to arrive.
   APL Direct Logistics, a subsidiary of APL Logistics, is the supply chain management arm of NOL Group.
