APL tracking reefers by satellite       APL has rolled out a new satellite tracking service that continually monitors the temperature and humidity conditions inside refrigerated containers.
      APL said the SMARTemp service provides real-time data on reefers from origin to destination and can eliminate costly and time-consuming processes including post-voyage cargo validation required to ensure sensitive high-value products such as pharmaceuticals are fit for market.
      The service works by using a communication module that decodes data from a microprocessor controller fixed to the cargo container, which records temperature and humidity levels and transmits this via the low orbit Iridium satellite satellites to APL's central server. Customers can retrieve real-time data via APL's HomePort e-commerce portal.
      APL said proprietary software ensures signal integrity even when containers are closely stacked onboard vessels.
      APL predicted the technology could lead to a significant expansion of the type and volume of sensitive cargo transported via ocean because shippers would have greater confidence that ocean freight is a viable transportation option for cargo that has traditionally moved by air.
