APL’s transpacific services 94% on-time
Singapore-based liner carrier APL said Friday in its mid-year report on 2011 vessel reliability that APL ships on westbound transpacific sailings missed their arrival window seven times out of 114 port calls to the U.S. West Coast from January through June 2011.
APL attributed delays to unseasonal typhoons, heavy fog and the earthquake in Japan.
'Schedule reliability is the cornerstone of customer service in container shipping,' said APL President Ken Glenn. 'We will continue to deliver a reliable product in the transpacific and pursue an even better on-time performance.'

The report measures reliability on the five Asia-to-U.S. West Coast services operated exclusively with APL vessels. APL considers vessels on-time if they arrive within four hours of their scheduled arrival. Most carriers measure reliability on arrival windows that range from 12 to 24 hours.
The five services measured were the line's PS1, PS2, PS5, PCE and SAX loops. Six of the missed arrival windows came on the PS5 service, which has a rotation of Shanghai, Busan, Los Angeles, Oakland, Yokohama, Busan and Shanghai, according to American Shipper affiliate ComPair Data.
