APM: Italian ports could be southern gateway to Europe
APM Terminals said it is developing a proposal to develop a new container terminal in the Port of Monfalcone on the Adriatic coast of Italy, about 18 miles northwest of Trieste.
APM said a terminal in northeast Italy, which could be complementary to a terminal it's building in the Italian port of Savona-Vado, is due to open in 2015. Savona-Vado is on the other side of the Italian peninsula, about 30 miles southwest of Genoa.
The two ports 'have the potential to be the southern gateway to the European container market currently served by significantly longer supply chains via Europe's North Sea,' APMT said in a statement.
They 'offer the best opportunity to serve a market which ranges from Eastern France to Southern Germany, Switzerland, Central-Eastern Europe' and 'could provide a faster, greener and more cost effective alternative to conventional Northern Europe'Asian trade routes.'
