APM Terminals Mumbai sets throughput record

The over 2 million TEUs handled by APMT in fiscal 2014 accounted for 45% of total container volume at Jawaharlal Nehru Port in Mumbai, India.    APM Terminals Mumbai set a new throughput record for Indian ports, handling 2.01 million TEUs during the company’s fiscal year ended March 31, 2015, according to a statement from the company.
In February 2015, APMT Mumbai also set a new record for highest February volume recorded by an Indian container terminal, with 164,678 TEUs.
The company attributed the growth in volume primarily to the larger 9,000-TEU containerships that have been calling APMT Mumbai since 2013, the deepening of the Mumbai harbor channel in 2014, and an overall increase in container volumes worldwide. APM noted, however, that the growth “is straining the existing Indian port infrastructure, which must also deal with regulatory issues which have held back further infrastructure investment.”
“The need of the hour is to ensure we find an acceptable solution with the authorities on the longstanding issue of the tariff that we are allowed to charge at the terminal,” said Rizwan Soomar, chairman of APM Terminals Mumbai.
One of three terminals at Jawaharlal Nehru Port, the largest container port in India, AMPT’s Mumbai operations accounted for 45 percent of the port’s throughput and approximately 20 percent of India’s total container traffic. Thanks to initiatives designed to boost productivity, the terminal handles an average of 5,000 TEUs per day, compared with a previous daily throughput of 3,500 to 4,000 TEUs.
