APM Terminals orders quay canes for Dutch terminal

APM Terminals said it will use 10 ship-to-shore cranes built by Cargotec for its Maasvlakte II terminal in Rotterdam.
Cargotec will supply eight Kalmar super quay cranes and two Kalmar barge quay cranes to the APM Terminals Maasvlakte II expansion project between December 2013 and December 2014.
Cargotec’s Kalmar Monobox-type, Super Post Panamax quay cranes have an outreach of 25 containers with Bromma spreaders. The cranes are semi-automated and capable of handling two 40 foot containers in one lift (twin-lift and tandem-lift capability) and can be remotely operated.
Maersk’s new “Triple E” containerships will have 23 rows of containers, compared to 22 on the Emma Maersk-class ships.
Frank Tazelaar, managing director of APM Terminals Maasvlakte II, said “we want to constantly improve productivity for our customers and safety for our employees so we designed the terminal using innovation and foresight for the future. Automation and the safety and efficiency gains it brings is a key performance driver. The quay cranes selected represent an industry first – to be operated by remote control. Using two trolleys on quay cranes is also not common. Twin lift spreaders will yield better performance too.”
The cranes are being engineered in Cargotec’s Rotterdam office and manufactured at Cargotec’s facility in Nankong, China.
Earlier this week APMT announced an order for container stacking cranes for the terminal and cranes for the terminal’s rail yard. Those cranes will be built by the Austrian crane manufacturer Kuenz.
