Asia/Canada carriers extend peak season surcharge again    Shipping lines of the Canada Transpacific Stabilization Agreement have agreed on a second extension to their $400 peak season surcharge for shipments from Asia to Canada through Jan. 31, due to sustained higher cargo volumes from Asia.
   The surcharge was to have expired Nov. 30. The first extension of the duration of the peak surcharge was announced mid-October.
   Canada Transpacific Stabilization Agreement carriers say ships continue to run full approaching the holiday season, with forward bookings indicating “strong demand for at least the remainder of the year,” the carrier group said in a joint statement.
   The agreement cited a severe imbalance between inbound and outbound volumes and higher costs for vessel charters, feeder service, equipment positioning, staffing, routing and scheduling.
   “In addition, peak period terminal and rail delays at Canadian and U.S. gateways continue to have significant network impacts on schedules, port calls and cutoff times for receiving cargo in Asia,” the Canada Transpacific Stabilization Agreement said.
   Members of the agreement are APL, COSCO Container Lines, Evergreen, Hanjin Shipping, Hapag-Lloyd, Hyundai Merchant Marine, “K” Line, Lykes Lines, MOL, NYK Line, OOCL and P&O Nedlloyd.
