ASIA/EUROPE CARRIERS START EMERGENCY SURCHARGE

Shipping lines of the Far Eastern Freight Conference have announced the introduction on Monday (Oct. 1) of a $10-per-container emergency surcharge to cover extra costs associated with vessel transits through the Suez canal.

“Although the member lines have not yet been charged very high additional war risk premia, they are now experiencing extra costs as a result of the current situation,” the carrier group said.

The $10 surcharge is temporary and the conference warned that it will likely raise its amount to reflect expected higher war risk insurance costs.

The Far Eastern Freight Conference said that it would give four days’ notice of a future increase in the emergency surcharge.
