ATA backs drug testing bill for truckers

   American Trucking Associations applauded Reps. Reid Ribble of Wisconsin and Chuck Fleischmann of Tennessee for calling for a pilot program to require drug testing of hair samples for truck drivers in the United States.
   The proposed bill would require the Transportation Department to develop a pilot program to test the viability of hair testing on truckers.
   According to an ATA press release, hair testing for drugs is much more effective that currently used methods. 
   “No fleet wants to put the safety of the public at risk by putting an impaired driver behind the wheel of one of its trucks,” ATA’s Mike Card said in a statement. “More effective drug testing procedures can help us make sure that doesn’t happen. ATA invites the U.S. Department of Transportation to join it in supporting this approach to improving the regulated testing program.”
