Veterans hired by Averitt who qualify for the Post 9/11 GI Bill can receive several benefits through the OJT program.
In addition to eligibility to receive up to 12 monthly payments from the Department of Veterans Affairs while receiving on-the-job training, program participants will receive six weeks of behind-the-wheel training at $600/week. During the remaining 46 weeks, new hires will work with a mentor and leadership for follow-up training.
All required paperwork is completed by eligible drivers during orientation; benefit checks are paid directly from the VA, not Averitt, usually four to six weeks after training begins.
Ex-military hires are eligible to earn up to $1,140 per month tax free using available Post-9/11 GI Bill funds, plus a weekly Averitt paycheck, as well as an up to $4,800 tuition/transition bonus from Averitt, paid weekly.
Averitt Express has said the program is part of a commitment to hire 1,200 military veterans by 2020. Among the positions that the company’s currently offering for veterans are truck driver jobs in Tennessee, Georgia, South Carolina, Wisconsin, Arkansas, Texas, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi and Alabama.
“Hiring military veterans is a special focus for our team, because they are a perfect fit on many levels,” Elise Leeson, Averitt’s vice president of human resources, said. “They have a strong sense of commitment and service, they know how to work as part of a team, and they have discipline that helps them excel in whatever role they play. They’re exactly the kind of associates we want to have on our team.”
