AXS-Alphaliner: Far East/Europe capacity grows 16.5 percent

Steamship lines are operating 57 loops with a weekly capacity of 321,500 TEUs, or 16.7 million TEUs annually, between the Far East and Europe (including Australia-New Zealand and Europe strings), according to figures produced by AXS-Alphaliner based on capacity to be deployed between April and May.

The capacity is a 16.5 percent increase over the past two years. The projection shows that roughly 400,000 TEUs of new ship capacity will have to be added within the next 12 months in order to cope with the growth, enough to absorb some 25 percent of the capacity to be delivered by shipyards.
