Bahamas pushing Cariforum The Trade Ministry for the Bahamas is pushing for renewal of the Cariforum trade agreement with the European Union in an effort to ensure sustained exports.
   The agreement, set to expire at the end of 2007, calls for suspended tariffs for trade between member nations of the Caribbean Community and the European Union.
   'If the present agreement between the EU and Cariforum expires without a new agreement in place, there will be adverse consequences for the competitiveness of Bahamian goods entering the European Union. The government is determined to avoid that,' said Fred Mitchell, Bahamian Minister of Trade.
   He said the agreement benefits key Bahamian exports of rum, seafood, and polystyrene products. The Bahamas had exports of $6 billion last year, including trade with the United States and Asia, according to the Trade Ministry.
