Barbados strike averted for now The union representing workers at the Port of Bridgetown in Barbados called off a scheduled strike Thursday after members said they wanted to see if workers and port management could resolve a dispute centered around a dismissed employee.
   Sir Roy Trotman, general secretary of the Barbados Workers Union, said the strike was 'postponed' after additional talks with aggrieved workers, according to a report in The Nation newspaper in Bridgetown.
   He said the union had decided to give port management an opportunity to settle the dispute before the start of a full-blown strike and port shutdown.
   There have been two short work stoppages of two hours or less in the last two weeks, after the port dismissed a veteran employee for a purported security breach. The union contends the worker became ill and should have been taken for medical attention, reports in the paper said.
