Bayonne voids contract to sell land for auto terminal

Bayonne voids contract to sell land for auto terminal The Bayonne Local Redevelopment Authority (BLRA) Thursday night voted to void a deal to sell a tract of land at a former New Jersey army base to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey for use as a roll-on, roll-off marine terminal.
In September, the Board of Commissioners of the port authority agreed to pay $50.5 million to acquire a 153-acre parcel at the base, and the BLRA approved the sale.
But after complaints that the meeting where the BLRA voted on the deal had been improperly advertised under a New Jersey open meeting law, a revote was scheduled for last night.
In the meantime, several parties have said they were willing to top the port authority’s bid and made presentations to the Bayonne City Council. Those developers include including the stevedoring giant Ports America, a consortium led by the Worldwide Group and the Shaw Group, and a Brooklyn developer called Fortis Property Group.
Local longshoremen supported a plan by Worldwide to build a container terminal on the property, but the Bayonne authority said last night it would not consider such a plan.
However it said it will consider plans by all three developers to build a roll-on, roll-off facilities.
The port authority had no immediate comment on Thursday’s vote.
