Benjamin named ICAO secretary general The International Civil Aviation Organization has appointed Raymond Benjamin to secretary general for a three-year term, effective Aug. 1.
   He succeeds Taieb Cherif, who held the position since 2003.
   Benjamin started his career in 1976 with the French Civil Aviation Administration. In 1982, he became an air transport officer with the European Civil Aviation Conference, and later deputy secretary, a position he held for six years. He became chief of ICAO’s Aviation Security Branch in 1989.
   Benjamin returned to the European Civil Aviation Conference as executive secretary from 1994 to 2007. He is special adviser to the Joint Aviation Authorities Training Organization and the European Aviation Security Training Institute.
   ICAO is a specialized agency of the United Nations. It sets standards and regulations necessary for aviation safety, security, efficiency and environmental protection. The organization serves as the forum for cooperation in all fields of civil aviation among its 190 contracting states.
