Bertschi opens Rotterdam intermodal terminal

Bertschi opens Rotterdam intermodal terminal Swiss bulk logistics provider Bertschi AG on Friday inaugurated a new rail terminal in the Port of Rotterdam with intermodal connections to southern Germany and Italy starting next month.
   Additional links to Eastern Europe and other destinations will be incorporated later in the year.
   The daily rail capacity of the new 3.5-hectare terminal is four inbound and outbound shuttle-trains. Further expansion is expected to see the terminal handling capacity rise to 120,000 TEUs.
   Bertschi has invested about 10 million euros ($13.6 million) in the first phase development of the terminal.
   “The new intermodal terminal, close to the Brittani'haven dock, is situated favorably amidst the chemical industry in the Port of Rotterdam,” said Hans-J'rg Bertschi, chief executive officer of Bertschi, in a statement. “Our goal is to develop a hub for this chemical cluster, which will consolidate chemical product flows, both for local producers and imports, e.g. from the Middle East.
   “By doing so, we can rationalize the logistics processes and at the same time contribute to the modal shift from road to rail and waterways. Our company's mission is to develop sustainable logistics solutions for the chemical industry. This helps also to improve the environmental and the carbon footprint of the industry.”
