BMW expansion expected to benefit Port of Charleston An expansion by automaker BMW at its factory in Spartanburg, S.C., is expected to boost traffic at the Port of Charleston.
   BMW said Monday it will spend $750 million and add 500 new jobs at the assembly plant, boosting production from 160,000 to 240,000 cars by 2012.
   “The boost in the production capacity at BMW Manufacturing will positively impact the logistics, supplier and distribution networks that support the manufacturing processes,” said Josef Kerscher, president of BMW Manufacturing.
   The company said the expansion was expected to double parts container traffic and significantly increase exports through the Port of Charleston.
