BNSF hires Nober

Roger Nober, a former chairman of the Surface Transportation Board, will join Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corp. on Jan. 1 as its chief legal officer and corporate secretary, the company said Thursday.

Nober, a partner in the Washington, D.C. office of Steptoe & Johnson LLP, replaces Jeff Moreland, who moves over to be executive vice president public affairs and economic regulatory policy.

Nober focused on transportation law and legislative affairs at Steptoe & Johnson. Nober stepped down from the STB in December 2005 after more than two years as chairman. For nearly a year he was the only member of the three-man board.

Prior to joining the STB, Nober was the counselor to the deputy secretary of transportation. From 1997 to 2001, he served as chief counsel for the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, where he was the lead staff member on TEA-21, the Interstate Commerce Commission Termination Act and other transportation-related infrastructure and regulatory matters.

The company's BNSF Railway operating unit is partially regulated by the STB.
