BONNER NAMES MITCHELL TO HEAD NEW YORK OPERATIONS

   Susan T. Mitchell has been selected director of field operations for the U.S. Customs Service's New York Customs Management Center.

   Mitchell will be the first woman to attain this title. She will oversee Customs operations for cargo at the ports of Elizabeth, and Newark, N.J., as well as passenger operations at John F. Kennedy International Airport, managing more than 1,700 employees, in addition to providing technical assistance and operational issues at the ports.

   Mitchell is a 24-year veteran of Customs, and is Customs’ area director at JFK Airport. She became a Customs inspector in 1980 at JFK, where she also became the first woman to ascend to the job of JFK Customs area director.

   Since 1988, Mitchell has served in various management positions, including supervisory Customs inspector, process manager, director of operations support in the New York/Newark area, and assistant area director for passenger and enforcement at JFK.
