Bowles was President Bill Clinton's chief of staff from 1996 to 1998, and deputy chief of staff for two years prior. He ran for the Senate in North Carolina twice last decade and served as president of the University of North Carolina from 2006 to 2010, when he was appointed co-chairman of President Barack Obama's National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform.
Bowles is also a former administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration. He currently is a senior advisor to Carousel Capital and a director of Morgan Stanley.
