Robert E. Boyle, executive director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, has told his staff that he is resigning, according to Steven Coleman, a port authority spokesman.

A formal announcement is expected shortly.

George Pataki, New York’s governor, appointed Boyle as executive director in March 1997. Boyle had been president and chief executive officer of the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City, and treasurer of Pataki’s 1994 gubernatorial campaign.
