Bush nominates Schwartz to head U.S. Transportation Command

President Bush has nominated Air Force Lt. Gen. Norton A. Schwartz to the rank as general with his next assignment as commander of the U.S. Transportation Command.

Schwartz serves as director to the Joint Staff in Washington. Prior to that assignment, he was director of operations for the Joint Staff.

If confirmed by the Senate, Schwartz will replace Air Force Gen. John W. Handy, who has headed the Transportation Command and Air Mobility Command since November 2001. The date for the command change and the new commander for the Air Mobility Command have not been announced.
