C.R. England adds trailer device to improve aerodynamics

   C.R. England, the largest refrigerated motor carrier in North America, last month began using patented TrailerTail technology from ATDynamics on its latest order of new trailers to help improve aerodynamics and fuel economy.
   The Salt Lake City company previously utilized side skirts to improve fuel efficiency of its diesel trucks by 5 percent. It said the the collapsible, origami-style trailer tails, which are mounted to a semi-trailer’s rear doors and reduce drag at the flat surface of the trailer, have the potential to reduce fleet fuel consumption by 2 million gallons per year. ATDynamics claims the devices cut fuel consumption by 6.6 percent at 65 mph.
   C.R. England belongs to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Smartway program, a partnership between shippers and carriers to minimize fuel consumption and emissions.
