California legislature approves ballast water bill
California lawmakers have passed legislation aimed at controlling invasive organisms in ship ballast water.
Legislators sent a bill to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger last week that would require ships entering California ports to treat their ballast water to kill aquatic species that might be in their ballast tanks.
Treatment standards would be phased in, starting in 2009.
