Canada extends limit of “Arctic waters”

Canada’s Transport Minister John Baird introduced legislation in the House of Commons last week to enhance Canada’s sovereignty over Arctic waters and protect them from pollution.

The amendment will extend the application of the Arctic Waters Pollution Prevention Act by amending the definition of “Arctic waters” from 100 to 200 nautical miles, to help ensure that ships do not pollute Canadian waters.

Baird’s office said the increased coverage “will help support the safe and environmentally sound movement of ships in Canada’s Arctic waters.”
