The Grade Crossing Improvement Program upgrades crossings that see high traffic volume or have a significant accident history with flashing lights, new barriers and timing devices, according to a government press release. Railroads are responsible for half the price tag of each project, and Transport Canada will invest up to $550,000 on each crossing.
The program also closes certain crossings under federal jurisdiction by providing grants to the owner in return for the crossing rights. Since 2013, the government has closed 11 crossings for public safety reasons.
“A safe and secure national rail transportation system is important to local communities and to Canada’s economic well-being. While Canada has one of the safest rail systems in the world, improvements can still be made,” Lisa Raitt, Canada’s minister of transport, said in a statement. “This investment will enhance safety for pedestrians and motorists at over 600 locations across the country, and help save lives.”
