Canada to modify auto import rule The Canadian government proposed on Saturday to amend its motor vehicle safety regulations to simplify the process for importing new U.S.-made vehicles built with antitheft immobilizers.
   As of Sept. 1, all new cars, vans, light trucks and sport utility vehicles sold in Canada or imported into Canada are required to come equipped with electronic, antitheft immobilizers. The rule is intended to reduce the high incidence rate of auto theft occurring in the country. The proposed amendment will offer more flexibility to Canadians who want to import vehicles, Transport Canada said.
   The proposed amendment, published in the Canada Gazette, also applies to cars that are able to be modified with the devices. The government will allow a 15-day comment period before implementing the rule.
