Car carrier trade will reach 19.8 million units by 2010

Car carrier trade will reach 19.8 million units by 2010    The number of vehicles shipped by sea will reach about 19.8 million by 2010, 32 percent more than the 15 million units shipped in 2005, according to a new report from Drewry Shipping Consultants.
The report notes that about a quarter of the 64 million cars produced globally each year are exported.
Drewry said that as a result the car carrier fleet is likely to grow about 20 percent by 2010. Today, the London-based consultants say there are 600 car carriers with 150 ships on order.
'Given the expected trends in trade flows, we anticipate that the car carrier market will remain quite firm in the period up to the end of the decade,' Drewry said.
The report said six major operators control about 27 percent of the car carrier capacity, and further consolidation among owners is expected.
Major car carrier companies include: Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics, Hoegh Autoliners, Eukor Car Carriers, and the car carrier affiliates of the three major Japanese liner companies, NYK, MOL, and “K” Line.
