Caribbean foreign ministers meeting in Haiti

Top foreign and trade officials from the 14 nations of the Caribbean Community (Caricom) are holding a ministerial meeting with officials from the European Union today in Haiti, discussing trade and aid relations between the Caribbean and Europe.

The meeting represents the first time a ministerial meeting has been held in Haiti, which was reinstated as a Caricom member in February, after being suspended in 2004 because Caricom did not recognize the government that took control in a coup. When Rene Preval was elected president, the organization voted to reinstate Haiti.

Haitian development has also been a key theme of other Caricom meetings held this week, including the Cariforum meetings held Monday and Tuesday
