Carrier schedule reliability continues slide

   Global liner carrier reliability declined marginally from December to January, according to the latest figures from SeaIntel Maritime Analysis.
   SeaIntel recorded liner on-time performance at 58 percent in January from 59 percent in December in its latest monthly schedule reliability report. It’s the fourth straight month of decline, the analyst noted.
   Out of 8,700 measured arrivals in January, the report now includes 1,900 arrivals in trades to and from Africa, Middle East and the Indian Subcontinent. Most of these trades exhibited reliability in line with the global average, though the African import routes showed a markedly lower performance, at 31 percent, for Asia-to-Africa and 33 percent for Europe-to-Africa.
   For the top 20 carriers, Maersk Line maintains its place as the most reliable carrier at 72 percent, followed by Hamburg Süd at 71.6 percent and Hanjin at 63 percent. SeaIntel measures reliability as arrival on the same calendar day or the day before. Mediterranean Shipping Co. was the lowest performer of the top 20 lines in January, with a schedule reliability of 42 percent.
   When measured by the hour, rather than calendar day, Maersk also topped the list, with 83 percent of vessels arriving within 24 hours (plus or minus) and Hamburg Süd second at 80 percent.
   The eastbound transpacific saw reliability erode by 5 percent, with only 56 percent of arrivals being on the same day as advertised. Out of the top 20 carriers, APL was the top performer on the eastbound transpacific, while Maersk was the lead performer in the Asia-Northern Europe lane and UASC was the top performer in the Asia-Med trade.
   The measurements are based on SeaIntel’s database of more than 50,000 arrivals from 2,100 vessels, 28 trade lanes and 51 carriers since July 2011.
