CBP deploys two attaché’s to China

CBP deploys two attachés to China    U.S. Customs and Border Protection deployed its first customs attaché in China at the end of January and plans to send a second attach’ there at the end of this month, Michael Mullen, assistant commissioner for international affairs and trade relations, said last week.
   The attaché, based at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing, will serve as the liaison with host government officials on trade and security matters, and also assist U.S. companies deal with any customs-related issues.
   Product safety, counterfeiting and illegal transshipment are among the issues at the forefront of U.S.-China customs cooperation efforts.
   Mullen said the agency also plans to post attach’s in South Korea, India and Brazil and recently received State Department permission to deploy a customs officer to Egypt.
   Mullen provided the update at a public meeting in Tucson, Ariz., with industry representatives who regularly advise the agency on international commerce. – Eric Kulisch
