CBP Miami issues warning on generators

U.S. Customs and Border Protection's Miami field office has issued a bulletin about the proper importation of generators under the Clean Air Act, an issue that has led to the seizure of numerous shipments of generators.

Thomas Winkowski, Miami field office director, warned that the law prohibits the importation of all types of non-road equipment with internal combustion engines unless the import has been certified by the Environmental Protection Agency as meeting emission standards. Those standards include a requirement to display the appropriate emission labels, or to have the proper exemption papers.

'Due to the increase of seizures, CBP would like to remind the trade community to practice due diligence when importing the merchandise into the United States,' the bulletin said.

Importers and customs brokers should call the EPA Imports and Certification Hotline at (734) 214-4100, or go to the Web site, www.epa.gov/otaa/importslforms/3520-21.pdf.
