Coast Guard Capt. James D. Maes, commander of Coast Guard Sector Miami, is relinquishing command to Coast Guard Capt. Karl L. Schultz. The change will occur in a morning ceremony that is part of a time-honored military tradition marking the formal change of command.
Captain Schultz reports to Sector Miami from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass. While at Harvard, he completed a one year research fellowship in national security studies. From July 2003 to July 2005, he served as Commanding Officer of Coast Guard Cutter Venturous homeported in St. Petersburg.
When he was in St. Petersburg, he led operations for drug enforcement, alien migrant interdiction, and search and rescue efforts covering the southeastern U.S. and throughout the Caribbean.
Maes is retiring after thirty years of honorable service to the Coast Guard. Captain Maes became the Coast Guard’s first Sector Commander July 12, 2004, when the former Group Miami and Marine Safety Office were reorganized by the Commandant into a single command to better meet the safety and security needs of the maritime community.
