China Airlines’ management board has decided to keep Chiang Hung-i as
chairman of the airline at least until a cause can be determined for the
fatal crash of a CAL MD-11 in Hong Kong last week.
The crash killed three people and injured more than 200. It is the
second fatal accident for CAL in less than two years. A CAL A300 crashed in Taipei last
year, killing 202 people.
Separately, CAL reported a pretax profit of 1.3 billion Taiwan dollars
($40.8 million) in the first six months of the year, compared with a loss
of T$3.2 billion last year. Revenue grew 24 percent to T$29.37 billion,
reflecting this year’s rebound in Asia’s aviation markets.
