China plans to forgive Guyana debt

A top Chinese parliament official was scheduled to meet with Guyana President Bharrat Jagdeo and other Guyanese officials today to sign an agreement that would erase Guyana's $15 million debt to China, the Associated Press reports.

Gu Xiulian was scheduled to sign the agreement in Georgetown, Guyana, at the conclusion of a Caribbean trip that has included stops in Dominica and Grenada. His trip is believed to be intended to offset a Caribbean trip last week by Taiwanese Vice President Annette Lu, who visited the Dominican Republic, Guatemala and Paraguay, the report noted.
