China Shipping mega-vessel calls European ports for first time

First port of call for the 19K TEU vessel is Felixstowe.    The world’s largest containership, measuring over four soccer fields long and with capacity for 19,100 TEUs, is making its first rotation through Europe loaded with cargo from Asia. China Shipping Container Line’s CSCL Globe embarked on its maiden voyage a month ago and arrived at the Port of Felixstowe, in the United Kingdom, on Monday.
   The giant vessel will also call at Rotterdam, Hamburg, and Zeebrugge before returning to Asia where it will stop at Qingdao, Shanghai, Ningbo, Yantian and Port Kelang. It is part of CSCL and UASC’s joint AEX1 (Asia Europe Express) service, on which CMA CGM, Evergreen Line, Hanjin and Yang Ming also purchase slots.
   The Globe is the first of five 19,000 TEU vessels ordered by the Shanghai-based carrier from Hyundai Heavy Industries. The other four vessels will be added to the AEX1 later this year, CSCL said.
   Felixstowe is the largest container port in the UK.
