CMA CGM, New World Alliance to start Asia/U.S. East Coast service

CMA CGM, New World Alliance to start Asia/U.S. East Coast service    Marseilles, France-based CMA CGM has confirmed it is finalizing details with the New World Alliance — APL, Hyundai Merchant Marine and MOL — about a new Asia/U.S. East Coast service via Panama, expected to start in the summer.
   The memorandum of understanding is yet to be signed, so full details such as ports and vessels are still to be decided.
   The New World and Grand Alliance — Hapag Lloyd, NYK and OOCL — suspended their joint Asia/U.S. East Coast ECS/EC3 service at the end of last year just a few months after it started in August, amid a series of “slack season” capacity reductions.
   That service is also expected to resume in the summer, but carriers questioned by Shippers' NewsWire declined to comment if it is related to the deal with CMA CGM.
   The ECS/EC3 had used ships averaging about 3,900 TEUs calling Shanghai; Chiwan; Shekou; Hong Kong; Manzanillo, Panama; Savannah, Ga.; Norfolk, Va.; and back to Shanghai.
