CMA CGM ponders switch to PTP

CMA CGM is said to be discussing an agreement with the Port of Tanjung Pelepas to shift volume in Malaysia from Port Klang in Malaysia, according to a report Thursday in Fairplay.

The discussion involves the migration of more than 1 million TEUs. PTP is a primarily a transshipment port on the southern tip of peninsular Malaysia and is typically in competition for volume with the nearby Port of Singapore. It serves as a regional hub for both Maersk Line and Evergreen, two of the top four carriers in the world.

Klang, the busiest container port in Malaysia, is the closest port to the capital Kuala Lumpur. In 2008, Klang handled 7.9 million TEUs, while PTP handled 5.6 million. The shifting of 1 million TEUs could theoretically make the ports volume virtually the same.
