CN averts impending labor strike

A tentative contract agreement was reached yesterday after railway union TCRC-CTY informed Canadian National Railway over the weekend of an impending strike.    Canadian National Railway (CN) has reached a tentative contract agreement with the union Teamsters Canadian Rail Conference – Conductors, Trainpersons and Yardpersons (TCRC-CTY).
   On Saturday, the union informed CN of an impending strike beginning May 30. The TCRC-CTY, which represents some 3,000 CN conductors and yard operations employees in Canada, said the strike would begin at 4:00 am Eastern Daylight Time on Tuesday, but did not state how long the strike would last.
   However, CN and TCRC-CTY on Monday reached a settlement on a new labor contract, thus avoiding a strike.
   “CN is very pleased to have reached this settlement with TCRC-CTY without a service disruption,” said Mike Cory, CN executive vice-president and chief operating officer. “This new agreement reinforces CN’s commitment to working together with our employees and their representatives to address workplace issues in a mutually beneficial manner.”
   CN transports roughly $185.5 billion annually in manufactured products and consumer goods between Canada and America.
