CN says shippers may experience “some delays” from CAW strike
Canadian National Railway Co. said shippers may experience “some delays” as a result of the strike by the Canadian Auto Workers (CAW), which started midnight.Earlier this week, members of the CAW rejected three tentative agreements signed between the union and the railroad Jan. 23. The union represents about 5,000 CN shop craft, clerical and intermodal yard employees in Canada. The existing union contracts expired Dec. 31.
CN and CAW adjourned talks Thursday evening after the two sides, assisted by federal mediators, could not come to terms on new contract agreements. CN said it has no plans at this time for further discussions with the CAW.
Meanwhile the railroad tried reassure shippers. “CN will operate normal freight schedules, with management staff performing key CAW functions,” the Montreal-based railroad said in a statement Thursday.
