CN strikes mitigation deals on EJ&E route

CN strikes mitigation deals on EJ&E route Canadian National Railway said it has reached agreement with the village of Mundelein, Ill. on mitigation plans if its $300 million acquisition of short line railroad Elgin, Joliet and Eastern Railway from U.S. Steel goes forward.
   Under the agreement, CN will assist in the maintenance of quiet zones, and take various steps to increase the fluidity of train movements through Mundelein, as well as improve safety, communications, emergency preparedness, and access to the Metra commuter train.
   In recent weeks, CN has announced similar deals with other cities along the railroad — Chicago Heights and Crest Hill, Ill., and Dyer, Ind. In August it announced a deal with Joliet.
   The transaction is being reviewed by the Surface Transportation Board, which CN said is encouraging voluntary mitigation agreements.
   The purchase is opposed by some towns along the line because of the increased rail traffic it would create.
