Allen, who was scheduled to retire from the Coast Guard in July, agreed last week to remain in his current role as National Incident Commander for the Deepwater BP Oil Spill.
Free of his other duties as commandant, Allen said, “will allow me to focus solely on this critical response, and Admiral Papp on the vital work of the Coast Guard.’
